Sorry! The vocals sort of ruin the album.

Why all you guys are disappointing? It is known that Younger Brother and Shpongle bands are away from psy trance and pure electronic world. They give us new fresh music ideas with match more natural instruments but they still have the unique signature in their music. To be able to compose every time something different from the previous and to keep the sound signature that makes you unique is very rare today. It needs a lot of talent, talent you find in those bands. So, please stop to com plane about why they changed so match their sound. If you interesting for something different from all the others Younger Brother and Shpongle is all you want!

Dont get me wrong the idea of every album being very different from the last is a good theme to keep up, but the actual soundscape created by Simon and Benji is heavily lacking in too many of their songs on this album. I dont have a problem with Ru's voice, in fact for a male singer i DO enjoy his singing. I just dislike how its their selling point and main focus on this album.

Zeocolonies above has echoed my thoughts precisely: whereas the previous YB album incorporated Ru's vocals as part of a melody, adding an organic layer of sound, Vaccine's tracks revolves around it and could simply be considered: "songs". The psychedelic element is a hovering buzz, not a leading force. This may be as a result of Twisted's claims that they needed money, having spent it extensively on live-shows, and have thus chosen a more mainstreamed focal point for their album. Commercial? yes. Disappointing? that depends.Having a lead-singer doesn't mean it's bad, naturally. There's still plenty of music to be heard: YB fill their songs with typically quirky samples that are blended well with Ru's singing, alongside the classic drums & guitar combo. They aren't so far out there, compositionally, as YB's previous stuff, but still create a very warm and lush feel to the songs, not surprising considering who's behind the knobs. The overall sound is smooth and unobtrusive, so it can work as nice background music too.Towards the end of the album, YB have "allowed" themselves to experiment a bit more. Sys 700 & Tetris tell a musical story (if a bit conventional, in psychedelic terms), where vocals are added as a topping element rather than a focal-point, yielding a very pleasant result, similar to that of their previous album. In all cases, however, there's a strong feeling of YB restraining themselves during peak moments, keeping the "madness" very low-fi and ultimately consumable. This obviously has its commercial cons, but psy-fans will def feel underwhelmed. As a whole, the album feels like YB2 on opium: very mellow and laid-back band-oriented performance with top-notch electronic make-over and psychedelic effects to go along. Most songs are pretty nice, no big climaxes anywhere but no real bad ones either (except, perhaps, Safety in Numbers, which sounds like a musical accident). Vaccine is a nice treat all around, but nothing groundbreaking musically. Anyone who likes vocals and the classic drums & guitars, spiced with electronica, would probably really enjoy this one.FYI, Simon P has promised (by his own words) to work on a third Hallucinogen album by the end of the year. Meanwhile, for those looking for an additional kick, it's worth mentioning Shine has an upbeat YB remix available freely at: http://soundcloud.com/charmfactory/younger-brother-shine-younger

I consider Shpongle and Younger Brother to be legendary in the psy world, so this album was a severe disappointment. In their previous album, The Last Days Of Gravity, the songs All I Want and Ribbon On A Branch worked very nicely with Ru singing in my opinion, using his vocals to back up the beautiful setting that Simon and Benji have created. This album should have been a side project, because its all backing up Ru, and I believe I speak for most if not all psy fans when I say this is NOT what we wanted from the genius collaboration project of Younger Brother. The only songs I legitimately enjoyed were Pound A Rhythm and System 700, I can see Train and Spinning Into Place growing on me possibly, but thats it.Going from 2 absolutely mindblowing albums to this, I am pushed to write this as my first review.
