Directed by Chris Porter & Mikey Cunningham at Life Is holds Empress Heights back from being a monumental album are only a few minor issues and, though they are small, they still detract from the impact of their songs. In places like on Changes, the clean vocals are a tad too whiny and shrill and grate on the ears, like a toddlers scream on a quiet coach. As far as debut albums go, Empress Heights is a solid effort with some decent tracks and chewy metal riffs. While its not the most inspired record, its still brimming with potential and has laid the foundations for a strong future. The Valiant have the versatility of August Burns Red with the heavier aspects of All That Remains thrown into the mix.
