In classical Greek mythology, Syrinx ˈsɪrɪŋks Greek Σύριγξ was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous god Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thenceforth known as syrinx. The word syringe was derived from this word. Syrinx was a Canadian electronic music group active from 1970 to 1972. Propelled by the electronic music compositions and keyboards of John Mills-Cockell, the group broke musical ground with their innovative use of the Moog Synthesizer and their world music inspirations. Their song, Tillicum, received national attention as the theme music for the television series Here Come the Seventies. Ok was just putting the 2 versions away when I noticed one record was more flexible than the other. The TG weighs 140g. The GT weighs 106g. So perhaps my assumption above was wrong. Any experts out there?

There is definitely at least 2 Cdn pressings/variations of this Lp. I have both laid out in front of me. I have no way of knowing which is first but I suspect the version where the record goes into the gatefold by opening it then inserting record in via inner (middle) gatefold opening is the earlier press. That's the only sleeve difference. For the label. On the matrix runout the letters r reversed to show GT and not TG. Their letter size is not the same. The GT version has "1970 True North bottom of label. The TG has "MANUFACTURED IN CANADA" on bottom of label. I don't know if original inserts were produced for this lp.

There may be at least 3 different variants. I'll be uploading a unique sub for the one I have, early press, from Eastern Canada. Heavier vinyl.

The one with "MANUFACTURED IN CANADA" in block capitals, and smaller fonts, would be the earlier pressing (I.e. TG deadwax version). This is the one shown in the photos here. Bigger typefaces would point to a Columbia Don Mills pressing, and Columbia Canada didn't establish their in-house pressing operations at Don Mills until 1971, so the GT would have to be from 1971 or later. If "MANUFACTURED IN CANADA" is either not in block capitals or not even there at all, then you can trust that it's from 1971 or later because that would mean the record was both pressed (and typeset) at Don Mills.Don Mills pressings were generally on lighter vinyl than what was produced by whatever plant Columbia Canada used beforehand so it makes sense that the earlier one would be on heavier wax.

An absolute gem of an album. The desolate, mournful tones of John Mills-Cockell's synth and piano blend gorgeously with the distant call of Doug Pringle's sax and the almost Third Ear Band-like percussion of Alan Wells, into a music that is cosmic, introspective, melancholy and deeply affecting. I cannot say more !
