Album

The second volume of Hawaiian guitar treasures from Hoopii covers the years 1927 all the way into 1951, near the end of his life and the last recordings he would make. By now, Hoopii had developed his trademark C minor tuning, and these middle- and late-period recordings show the depth and breadth of the inventions he could pull out of it at will. Of special interest here are three tracks from 1929 with Hoopii's original trio working in tandem with the Andrew Aiona Sax Trio, an odd traditional-Hawaiian-meets-art-deco musical bonding that somehow works marvelously on Hano Hano Hawai. Sol Ho'opi'i 1902-1953 was perhaps the most famous Hawaiian steel guitarist of the twentieth century. The youngest of twenty-one children from Honolulu, Hawaii, he came to the mainland in 1919 as a stowaway on an ocean liner to San Francisco, California, and later began recording in Los Angeles. Sol Ho'opi'i's Novelty Trio often mixed jazz and blues with traditional Hawaiian music. length: 3:19. My Hawaiian Queen. length: 3:15. 15 Fascinating Rhythm. I Like You Lyrics. Sol Hoopii Lyrics provided by . Do you like this album Leave a review. A master of the steel guitar, Hoopii melded Tin Pan Alley tunes, jazz, and even gospel together with traditional Hawaiian music to create a lush blend of virtuoso showpieces at the same time as America was embracing the culture of the not-yet-fiftieth state. Working the tiki lounge circuit of Los Angeles with his trio through the '30s, Hoopii even landed the occasional stint on the big screen-including Waikiki Wedding with Bing Crosby and a few Charlie Chan flicks. Hollywood aside, musically he was the John Coltrane of lap guitar before there was a Coltrane, of course. 1 - Sol Ho'opi'i.
