Karma is a jazz recording by the American tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, released in May of 1969 as Impulse Records AS 9181. The social and political upheavals of the 1960s have been cited as a major factor in the emergence of a new stylistic trend in jazz, with a very different emphasis to the forms of the music which emerged earlier. Many of the artists involved in the making of this new music, variously called free jazz, the new thing, or energy music, recorded for the Impulse label. Karma was released four years after his first record as a leader, Pharoah's First 1965. While working with Coltrane, Sanders began to develop an aggressive tone that ripped into an anarchaotic passion owing as much to Coltrane as Albert Ayler. His records as a leader did not always reflect the raw energy that would show up on Coltrane classics such as Ascension. His 1966 Impulse debut, Tauhid, is a great example of this. Sanders let the work take on a generalized groove that worked with the mood created in each piece. In doing so, he created not only his best pre-Karma record, but one. Pharoah Sanders - Karma 1969. Karma is only a two track album with the first track, The Creator Has A Master Plan a 32 minute journey, and I repeat, journey of song. It starts with amazing smooth jazz patterns with raindrop-percussion sounds. ARe you with me ok great i'll continue. At about the 2 12 minute mark we are introduced to some nice groovy congo drum beats that are very mellow under a layered musical attack of sax, flute, and ethnic percussive bliss. Up to this point the track is percieve as really amazing smooth avanta garde jazz. This goes on for about 10 minutes until awesome bitches brew vibes fade o. Genre: Avant-Garde Jazz. Having gotten his nickname by playing his tenor-sax with Sun Ra and John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders is probably the avatar of spiritual jazz after his mentors, of course. On his first few solo records, the artist fully indulged into that same fearless, striking eagerness for experimentation within the broad jazz spectrum, and he did really well on that, specially on his first two releases. Still, it was with Karma that the fantastic instrumentalist reached an even higher plane of artistic vision. read more. Pharoah Sanders Format: Audio CD. Please retry. Verified Purchase.
