Anguish and despair rightfully earn more Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, and Pulitzer Prizes than sweetness and light ever do, but West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar is already on elevated masterwork number two, so expect his version of the sobering truth to sound like a party at points. He's aware, as Bilal sings here, that Shit don't change 'til you get up and wash your ass, and don't it feel good . New Doc on INXS' Michael Hutchence: 12 Things We Learned. To Pimp a Butterfly is a densely packed, dizzying rush of unfiltered rage and unapologetic romanticism, true-crime confessionals, come-to-Jesus sidebars, blunted-swing sophistication, scathing self-critique and rap-quotable riot acts. Roll over Beethoven, tell Thomas Jefferson and his overseer Bull Connor the news: Kendrick Lamar and his jazzy guerrilla hands just mob-deeped the new Jim Crow, then stomped a mud hole out that ass. (Quick Review #41)Listen: #1+2I don't know what took me so long to listen to this album. I love GKMC, but this is much better. This is a masterpiece. I have so much love for the production, lyrics and themes of this album. Once again Kendrick pulls off the Concept album amazingly well. While not as obvious as the plot of GKMC, if you look into the lyrics enough you'll get it. This is truely an instant classic, and is with MBDTF as the best rap (or really any genre)album of the 2010s.10

What's up with all these post about the bootleg version being good?
  • Nalmergas
I am playing my copy for the first time and there is a constant skipping throughout the entirety of "These Walls." I thought everything sounded fantastic until that song, and I literally couldn't play through the end of the side without the skipping. Anyone else have this issue? EDIT:: I adjusted the weight on my turntable arm. though i hadn't had this issue with any other LPs, the arm definitely needed rebalancing. seems to have fixed my issue as of now.
  • Yellow Judge
I noticed on the inside gatefold it has Hood Politics and Momma switched around in the track listing. This is for the 2XLP, my mistake.
  • Kulabandis
The re-arrangement of the tracklist is an absolutely bizarre move. And precisely why I'm going to wait for the official release. The album's narrative and flow will be lost...
  • artman
I am not sure about anything regarding this release. I do know I have a 2LP set that I have yet to play, but the vinyl is NOT clear or even remotely so. One disk was white marble and the other pink marble. I am hoping that it sounds ok, but just haven't had the chance to listen yet.I think the buzz around this will ultimately increase sales once an official vinyl set is released, but I hope they don't wait forever :)
  • Kanal
Where that vinyl at?
  • Xtani
this is real hip hop
  • Foiuost
The clear 2xLP version that has been release is a bootleg. This has been confirmed by several sources. There is currently NO official vinyl release for this album.
  • Adaly
Vinyl release does exist and it's a "limited edition" 2x LP on Clear and it's sitting on my shelf at the moment. Happy RSD.
  • Lyrtois
It's not a legitimate release it's a bootleg aka "unofficial" release. Many RSD stores carried it along with their RSD stock which was kind of shady considering it's not an officially sanctioned release.
  • Qutalan
Gagging for a vinyl release please!
  • Chinon
I really want this on vinyl... please
  • Shistus
anyone know if that upcoming release is bootleg or official? Seems like it could be bootleg since it's showing up on german sites (here too: http://www.vinyl-digital.com/Hip-Hop-Rap/To-Pimp-A-Butterfly.html?listtype=search&searchparam=kendrick%20lamar)
  • Bolv
Why's the tracklisting different? The album flows perfectly, moving things around really messes that up.
  • Ndav
screams bootleg, wasn't the yeezus one also released by these guys? i'm waiting for the original... hopefully soon.
  • Shakanos
It's confusing. It seems like the vinyl you can preorder on hhv (http://www.hhv.de/shop/de/artikel/kendrick-lamar-to-pimp-a-butterfly-clear-vinyl-edition-417230?bc=true) is an UK bootleg (clear vinyl) while the version on vinyl digital (http://www.vinyl-digital.com/Hip-Hop-Rap/To-Pimp-A-Butterfly.html?listtype=search&searchparam=to%20pimp%20a%20butterfly) is on the label TDE Groove.
  • Swordsong
Looks like a bootleg to me. If it's as shitty sounding as the Section 80 clear vinyl bootleg, I won't buy it!
  • Minha
I refuse to get this album until it's on vinyl... So hopefully the official date comes SOON!!
  • Ffyan
The guys at my record store said the official vinyl release will be "sometime this summer". Pretty vague, but at least it's a timeframe.
  • Aedem
I heard that a vinyl release has been confirmed but no release date has been given. But, at least it will eventually be pressed.
  • LiTTLe_NiGGa_in_THE_СribE
There's a bootleg at least. I highly doubt it'll be out anytime soon; good kid m.A.A.d city took 2 years to be pressed.
