It was the last recording by the Jazz Messengers lineup featuring pianist Horace Silver. In 1968 Columbia reissued the LP in their Jazz Odyssey Series with a new cover under the title Art Blakey with the Original Jazz Messengers. In 1997 the album was digitally remastered and released on CD, again with its original title and cover, featuring all the tracks from the original LP along with five additional tracks. Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers became synonymous over the years, though Blakey did lead non-Messenger recording sessions and played as a sideman for other groups throughout his career. Byrd would later reappear with Blakey on 1957s Art Blakeys Big Band and 1958s Holiday For Skins, both sans the Messengers. Swing them to death, Blakey used to tell his players before they walked onstage. Moanin, their only studio album with Morgan and Golson at the helm, takes this edict as a sworn oath. By now, its jazz law: Out of any Messengers album by any version of the band, Moanin is the most deserving of being toted onto a desert island
