Gaîté Parisienne, ballet music by Offenbach arranged by Manuel Rosenthal. Much of the music in Gaîté Parisienne, of course, was already familiar when it was first presented, which may have aided its success. The popular Can-Can, for example, is taken from Offenbach's operetta, Orpheus in the Underworld 1858 rev. The familiar Barcarolle, which closes the ballet, comes from the Tales of Hoffman 1881, his last operetta. There is much other attractive music in Gaîté Parisienne, all of it in a light vein. There are two colorful polkas, five waltzes, a Ländler, and many other dances, most frothy and joyous, all quite tuneful and direct. Provided to YouTube by Universal Music Group. Offenbach: Gaîté parisienne - Arranged by M. Recorded in the Northrop Memorial Auditorium, University of Minnesota, Apr. Program notes on îté Parisienne literally, Parisian Gaiety is a ballet choreographed by Léonide Massine to music by Jacques Offenbach orchestrated by Manuel Rosenthal in collaboration with Jacques Brindejonc-Offenbach, the composer's nephew. With a libretto and décor by Comte Étienne de Beaumont and costumes executed by Barbara Karinska, it was first presented by the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo at the Théâtre de Monte Carlo on 5 April 1938. Rosenthal's recording in the mid-1950s with the Berlin RIAS orchestra for Remington, and a later recording late 1970s for EMI with the same orchestra as this Naxos CD, coincidentally are just so much more effective. Seek out Eugene Ormandy, Arthur Fiedler, Anatole Fistoulari, and even Georg Solti as useful alternatives. A similar situation exists with the selections from Offenbachiana that serve as a filler on the Naxos CD. Genre: Ballet Pr. Instrument: Orchestra.
