Play album. Jacques Brel. Jacques Brel 8 April 1929 9 October 1978 was a Belgian singer and songwriter who composed and performed literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following in Belgium and France initially, and later throughout the world. He was widely considered a master of the modern chanson. Although he recorded most of his songs in French, he became a major influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers such as David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Leonard Cohen, Marc Almond and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many top performers i read more. Jacques Brel released no new studio album between 1959 and 1963, instead wrapping up his Phillips label contract with the quintessential Paris Olympia live album. He was not idle during this period, however. Several EPs appeared, while he also contributed to two movie soundtracks, La Belgique Vue De Ciel and Un Roi Sans Divertissement. The bulk of Les Flamandes concentrates on Brel's late '50searly '60s output, rounding up the aforementioned odd EP cuts and soundtrack appearances, but still contriving to deliver a pair of major hits. 1959's Les Flamandes is included here as overflow from Barclay's CD reissue of his third and fourth LPs, La Valse a Mille Tempts. It was released in December 1989. The album is a tribute to the Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel and was instigated by Almond's collaboration with Paul Buck, who adapted Brel's original non-English lyrics specifically for Almond. The songs for the album were recorded at Milo Studios, London, over four years. Almond was accompanied both by his assembled band comprising La Magia and Willing Sinners members Annie.
