The flipside of Tate's December 1966 release on Verve Records, Look at Granny Run Run, is as good and, to many, better than the A-side. A humbling effort from Tate about being a half a man if. Like all his recordings, Tate's fluid tenor and vocal creativity keep you from wavering a second. He was a master of situational soul, and equally adept at wailing or moaning to get the story line across. Get It While You Can: The Legendary Sessions. But by the mid-1990s Tate had overcome his addictions and become a minister. In 2003 he released the album Rediscovered, with Mr. Ragovoy once again writing and producing, and the album was nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary blues record. Over the next five years Mr. Tate toured and released four more albums. He died on December 2, 2011 at his apartment in Burlington, N. J at the age of 72. This is Tate’s first solo record prior to signing for Verve Records. Known since the days of the Torch it has always been a difficult 45 to find. Unrelated to the West Coast label of the same name this is most likely a New York imprint but there is a faint chance that it could be a Philadelphia label.
