Prior to this, Gato had been playing avant-garde, free jazz with folks like Don Cherry. There was not a trace of Latin influence in the music he recorded during that earlier period. By contrast, his more well-known music from the '70s was heavily Latin-influenced and saw him adopting a more conventional musical language, though his distinctive rough-hued sax tone remained. Because it's a transitional work, th.
