At the same time laying out an encompassing portfolio of best-kept-secret material. I've never witnessed this level of experimentation in any other big band - the orthodoxy in one's raised-from-jazz canon wouldn't allow it. The listener will happily put aside all quibbles, however, when the music is heard. Here is a tasty big band recording from Charles Mingus, Let My Children Hear Music is an obscure recording in a sense, you sure don't hear it mentioned in any of the Mingus best of lists, Truth is, that list is so long, 5 or 10 usually only scrapes the surface anyway. I hear a mature Mingus at peace with himself. Charles Mingus - Don't Be Afraid, The Clown's. Album 1972 7 Songs. Charles Mingus - The Chill Of Death. Blues & Roots Mono. The music is scored for large jazz orchestra and Mingus worked with several arrangers, orchestrators and conductors, most notably Sy Johnson and Alan Raph, to realize some of his most ambitious compositions. I love this album, which I've owned since 1984 or so. I bought it in Mole Jazz in London, it was quite expensive at the time. Can anybody tell me why there are black stickers obscuring the edge of the label?
Columbia records were released in the UK on CBS so all references to Columbia had to be hidden.
