From the atmospheric beginning of Wurds to the chiming tones of Poppy, the Manchester duo have crafted a record which twists with defiance and breathy beats. Embellished with delicate sonics, the tunes expand and morph into songs almost spectral and ethereal, drenched in power and experimentalism. The sound is startling and effect beguiling. I bought this one on a whim today, thinking it would be some sort of alternative folk music like everything else I've purchased from Bella Union. It's actually really good electronica, sort of like a chillwave Cocteau Twins or a nocturnal Bjork. I'm also pretty certain that a good third of the songs are about lesbianism. Recommended for fans of Portishead, Cocteau Twins, or Neon Indian. I really hope these two release a second album.
